Bybit Suffers $1.46 Billion in Suspicious Ether Outflows
Bybit, a popular cryptocurrency exchange, has confirmed that its multi-signature cold wallet was breached, resulting in the loss of nearly $1.5 billion in Ether. The incident occurred just hours after the exchange increased access to liquidation data for transparency. Bybit's CEO, Ben Zhou, stated that hackers infiltrated the exchange's ETH multi-signature cold wallet, draining the massive amount of crypto. The breach was first flagged by renowned on-chain sleuth ZachXBT, who alerted the public to suspicious withdrawals from Bybit. Companies typically use multi-signature wallets to mitigate single points of failure, as transactions require approval from multiple parties. However, in this case, the hackers managed to deceive all signers. Zhou explained that the attackers masked a transaction to mislead the wallet's signers, leading them to believe they were approving a legitimate address.
